Both irreverent and surprisingly sentimental, The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas is the classic country-western musical comedy based on the strange-but-true story of the real-life Chicken Ranch brothel. Protected by a friendly sheriff and frequented by governors, senators, mayors and even victorious college football teams, Miss Mona's cozy bordello thrives in the small town of Gilbert -- until a puritan nemesis in the guise of a crusading do-gooder focuses his television cameras and his righteous indignation on the institution and tries to shut it down. Nominated for a passel of Tonys in its original '79 Broadway run and turned into a hit film starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton, this latest production comes to the Gateway Theatre in San Francisco, courtesy of 42nd Street Moon.

The 2017 Tony Award-winning Best Play Oslo tells the true -- albeit little known -- story of Norwegian diplomat Mona Juul and her husband, Terje Rod-Larsen. Together, the two coordinated top secret peace negotiations between Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat in the early 1990s. Their efforts culminated in the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993. Oslo is a story about the individuals behind world history and their all too human ambitions. Come see it at the Falls Theatre at ACT in Seattle.

It's July 2000 -- the Oslo Accords are falling apart, and in Tenleytown, a modern Jewish family is fracturing over what to do with their 14th Street real estate. Their mother has died, their father will need full-time care, and as their adult children debate what do to next, no topic is off limits: American Jews and their relationship to Israel, who's already given enough to this family, a sibling's parenting choices. Written with vicious humor and unflinching honesty by Tony-winning Bethesda native Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen), If I Forget explores what we're willing to sacrifice for a new beginning. This political, personal play about history and responsibility takes you on a deep dive at D.C.'s Studio Theatre.

He may be king, but unlike his older brother Richard the Lionheart, John has no stirring nickname, and everyone from the Pope to his own court seems to think his crown is up for grabs. Taking his audience back to the time of the Magna Carta, Shakespeare slyly commented on the politics of his own day. Now, director Aaron Posner treats you to a toxic brew of ambition and indecision in this rarely staged but timely history. The medieval court is transported to the D.C. stage as King John unfolds at Folger Theatre.

You're gonna need a bigger boat -- most likely made out of felt -- for this all-puppet production of Hollywood's first-ever summer blockbuster. Jaws: Live, Abridged & Completely Underfunded is a low-fi puppet parody of the iconic horror film that's jam-packed with pop culture references, ludicrous audience interactions and penny-pinching sets. The timeless tale of a small town haunted by a big shark takes on a whole new meaning when it's performed by a cast of potty-mouthed puppets -- which you can see for yourself at Phoenix's Playhouse on the Park.

Life's too short not to soak up the truly spectacular sight of the fall foliage along the Hudson River, especially when all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy an included hot or cold beverage. This serene cruise takes off from New York's convenient Chelsea Piers aboard the Kingston, a cozy and elegant 1920s-style yacht, and carries you north in the comfort of the ship's heated and enclosed observatory or enjoying the breeze outside on the bow. You'll marvel at the views of the beautiful Upper West Side of Manhattan, the majestic George Washington Bridge and the dramatic cliffs of Palisades Park. And then there are the leaves ... the stunning reds, oranges and golds that actually inspired an entire artistic movement, not to mention poets like Walt Whitman and Thomas Wolfe, who wrote this rhapsody in the river's honor: "Oh, more than anything it was the light. / The light, the tone, the texture of the magic light. / In which he had seen the city as a child, / that made the Hudson River wonderful."

Fans of Drunk History and all its slurred education will fall over laughing at Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare, which combines an entirely serious Shakespeare play with one completely inebriated cast member. For the last six years, Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare has been performed in the darkest corners and diviest bars in the U.K., and the cast is bringing the good time to Austin. Side-splitting, raucous and completely interactive, the show is fresh off sell-out runs at the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe festivals, where a cast member drinks beer, wine and whiskey on stage, drunkenly sings the Dawson's Creek theme song and occasionally (accidentally, of course) bares a nipple or two. Brush up on your Bard knowledge, and head down to The Rockwell near Boston for The Taming of the Shrew, because this is Shakespeare as you never knew you wanted to see him before.

Long before Carole King became a chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, a girl from Brooklyn. Beloved for penning such iconic pop classics as "You've Got a Friend" and "I Feel the Earth Move," she fought her way into the record business as a teenager and ultimately flourished, writing hits for some of the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her true voice. Beautiful is the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. It's no surprise that Beautiful -- The Carole King Musical won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album of 2015. See this unforgettable show at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York City.

When it comes to celebrating the beauty of nature in painting, the name that immediately springs to mind is Georgia O'Keeffe. From her desert vistas to her close-up, sensuous abstractions of flowers, The Mother of American Modernism's work realigns the viewer's perception to recognize the wonder of the natural world all around us. So it makes sense that the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (now Dole) would hire O'Keeffe to paint the island paradise in order to make mouths water for their pineapples. Now you can enjoy the little-known paintings from this trip complemented with lush Hawaiian flora in the The New York Botanical Garden's Conservatory. Come immerse yourself in beauty.

The one-man play The Most Reluctant Convert, adapted from Lewis' own thoughts and writings on the experience, stars award-winning actor Max McLean, who portrays the author as he endures the death of his mother, works through his complicated relationship with his father and walks the path from staunch atheist to one of the most influential Christian intellectuals of his day. After successful runs in New York, DC and Chicago, see the philosophical exploration the Chicago Sun-Times called "bristling, provocative, highly entertaining," when C.S. Lewis Onstage brings one of the past century's most interesting personalities to life at Herberger Center's Center Stage in Phoenix.

The winner of the 2018 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, Labour of Love is a delightfully clever mashup of the political gamesmanship of The West Wing with a war of the sexes that feels straight out of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Set in a member of Parliament's district office, this wildly witty comedy is about the ups and downs of left-wing British politics over the past 25 years.

The disco-fueled interactive dance party known as The Donkey Show, very loosely inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, puts you smack in the middle of the action in a funky Cambridge lounge setting. Featuring two full bars and a dance floor, OBERON's Diane Paulus-created wonderland was inspired by Studio 54 in its heyday, when celebrities and art icons would mix and mingle with kids from Queens, and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack would be shaking the speakers. While you -- and the rest of the audience -- drink, dance to disco classics or just check out the action, the motley crew of characters in this glammed-up, sex-fueled version of Shakespeare's play re-enact the hilariously chaotic tale of a magic elixir that wreaks havoc at the nightclub. But it's mostly just a cool boogie-filled bash.

This 1974 classic which called a choreopoem, was conceived just two years before Penumbra Theatre was born. From its humble creation in 1974 to critical acclaim on Broadway, Ntozake Shange's Obie Award-winning choreopoem has excited, inspired and transformed audiences across the country. The literary luminary's fearless prose vividly paints intimate portraits of the pain and jubilation that women of color experience from girlhood throughout life. Shange was groundbreaking in her efforts to shatter the silence that protected abusers of women. For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf is a brave reckoning, a celebration, a healing ceremony and, perhaps most profoundly, an example of the awesome power a chorus of women's voices can have. Watch dance, music and poetic monologues combine at St. Paul's Penumbra Theatre.

A one-man terrorist cell wages war ... all because somebody killed his cat, in The Lieutenant of Inishmore. Oscar-nominated writer Martin McDonagh is famous for mixing his black Irish humor with a Tarantino-esque flair for violence in movies like In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths and this year's Golden Globe winner for Best Motion Picture -- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. But he's at his best in this stage drama of revenge, cats and blind justice that takes comic jabs at the absurdity of the terrorist mentality. Mad Padraic, a terrorist too fanatic even for the IRA, is enraged and grief-stricken when Wee Thomas, his beloved kitty, has "taken poorly" back home -- i.e. been found flattened on a local roadside. So Padraic returns to the wind-swept Aran Islands for a night of revenge, bloodshed and (yes) comedy. See The Lieutenant of Inishmore at The Stage in San Jose.

One of Arthur Miller's most popular plays and a central work in the canon of American theater, The Crucible dramatizes the Salem witch trials of late 17th-century Massachusetts. In a community undergoing great change -- where some feel as if they are losing control -- hatreds are expressed, the vulnerable are scapegoated, hysteria takes hold and vengeance is taken. Written as an allegory for American mid-20th-century political repression, The Crucible remains as relevant today as when it debuted in 1953. See Miller's chilling witch hunt drama at Sacramento Theatre Company.

The Agitators reveals the 45-year friendship and occasional rivalry between two great, rebellious, and flawed American icons: Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Great allies? Yes. But also, at times, great adversaries. The famous abolitionists met as idealistic youngsters in the 1840s, when they were full of hopes, dreams, and a common purpose. As they grew to become the cultural icons we know today, their movements collided, and their friendship was severely tested. This is the story of that 45-year friendship -- from its beginnings in Rochester, through a Civil War, and to the highest halls of government. These two great souls agitated the nation, agitated each other and helped shape the Constitution and the course of American history. Experience the history at Atlas Performing Arts Center through this loving and faithful portrait of two historical figures that also brims with modern urgency and relevance.

The fact that Oscar Wilde, the genius behind The Importance of Being Earnest and other oh-so-grown-up stage comedies, also wrote for children often comes as a surprise. That his fairy tales are enchanting and very, very funny is no surprise at all. Indeed, "Oscar Wilde" himself comes out to introduce his tale, The Selfish Giant, now at the Players Theatre. Told through dance, puppetry, music and skilled storytelling, The Selfish Giant is an intriguing fable about a greedy giant who learns that his most prized possessions are worthless unless they're shared. Come early for an interactive arts workshop before the show. There you can meet key members of the play's creative team and make an art project that will be used in the performance ... and then can be taken home as a special souvenir.

Fans of Drunk History and all its slurred education will fall over laughing at Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare, where an entirely serious Shakespeare play is performed with one entirely inebriated cast member. For the last six years, Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare has been performed in the darkest corners and diviest bars in the UK, and the cast is now bringing the good time to Boston. Brush up on your Bard knowledge, and head over to The Rockwell for a drunken twist on Romeo and Juliet, because this is Shakespeare as you never knew you wanted to see him before.

Featuring a barrage of two-minute plays from the Neo-Futurists, this production delivers those plays in a different order each time, based largely on interactions with the audience. You'll see the sets come up and go down, you'll hear shouts from your fellow spectators, and you'll experience theater like you've never experienced it before. This modern dress version begins with a prelude presenting refugee voices from modern conflicts, as far back as World War II, as recent as today's Middle East. Refugee Voices and Euripides' The Trojan Women is as relevant today as the story Euripides told. Today, there are over 65 million persons displaced by conflicts around the world. Euripides understood their plight. MET's production relates that plight to today's circumstances.
