In 1993, Digable Planets dropped their debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) and left fans of backpack rap reeling. The trio of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler and former Howard students Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving sampled heavily from Art Blakey for their inescapable hit "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," turning hip-hop heads on to hidden jazz tracks. One Grammy and a second jazz-infused album later and Digable Planets had rap lovers digging in crates for albums by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers and The Last Poets. Throughout the '00s, the group branched out to other projects -- including Butler's abstract duo Shabazz Palaces and Vieira's kid's hip-hop collaboration with Prince Paul and members of Jurassic 5 and The Roots. Now, you can see all three creamy spies together again in concert at The Novo by Microsoft.

Beattie's attention to detail in re-creating the magic and childhood wonder of the original three films, and then be thrilled as the childhood wonder is abolished by good old-fashioned adult fun. Combining striptease, song and dance, troupe routines and comedy, this show is destined to deliver you to the dark side. Expect some seriously sexy stormtroopers, a dangerously seductive Boba Fett, tantalising Twi'leks, a Darth with a different kind of dark side, a delightfully lukewarm Taun Taun, a lady-like Skywalker, the droids you're looking for and much, much more at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles.

Ah, adolescence -- your parents drive you crazy, school is a drag, and you just discovered the seeming all-consuming importance of sex. The coming-of-age story has inspired countless classics, but few have exploded the way Spring Awakening did on Broadway and at the Tonys. With insanely catchy songs like "The B**ch of Living" and "Totally F**ked," this rock musical remix of a scandalous 1891 German play is a thoroughly modern take on the universal messiness of growing up. Now Cupcake Theater brings this bold and poignant modern classic to North Hollywood.

The comedic storytelling of Ms. Pat is founded on some intense sources of inspiration. A mother of two by the age of 15, and a dealer of drugs throughout her teenage years (all of which she documents in her harrowing and hilarious autobiography, Rabbit), Ms. Pat managed to turn her life around and find some hard-hitting humor in the difficult life she'd led. In fact, it was during visits to the welfare office for food stamps that it was first brought to her attention that she had a real knack for telling funny stories. And a decade later, her comedy career continues to thrive. She has appeared on TV Guide Network's Stand Up in Stilettos, Nickelodeon's Mom's Night Out and WTF With Marc Maron. Don't miss Ms. Pat's honest, hardcore and hilarious act onstage at Ontario Improv.

Tony Kushner's Tony and Pulitzer-winning masterpiece finally arrives at Berkeley Rep in its entirety, directed by artistic director Tony Taccone in his 20th anniversary season at the Rep. This is something of a homecoming for the play, as Taccone was the artistic director at the Eureka Theater, who originally commissioned and staged this epic dramatic saga in the early 1990s. After its premiere at Eureka, the play went on to become one of the defining theatrical events of the 1990s. The fierce and astounding two-part drama is at once an epic exploration of American politics and gay identity, and a personal story of love and loyalty. In today's sociopolitical climate, Kushner's universal message of compassion and inclusion makes Angels in America as timely as ever.

Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon is the world's longest-running musical revue. Since 1974, this San Francisco institution has followed Snow White on a musical comedy quest around the world, where she runs into satirically portrayed pop culture and political celebrities, an impressive array of gigantic hats and one show-stopping musical number after another. Because the show is constantly updated with new costumes, hats and characters, it rewards repeat visits. Among the familiar faces you might see spoofed at this Club Fugazi production: Lady Gaga, Barack and Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton and Adele. Now running for more than 40 years, Beach Blanket Babylon remains one of San Francisco's wildest evenings of live entertainment.

Long before Carole King became a chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, a girl from Brooklyn. Beloved for penning such iconic pop classics as "You've Got a Friend" and "I Feel the Earth Move," she fought her way into the record business as a teenager and ultimately flourished, writing hits for some of the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her true voice. Beautiful is the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. It's no surprise that Beautiful -- The Carole King Musical won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album of 2015. See this unforgettable show at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York City.

Creepy clowns were It this year in terms of pop culture, and there's none creepier, or more tragic, than Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto. The revenge-filled jester at the center of Victor Hugo's drama encourages the lecherous duke he serves to seduce a young woman, resulting in a curse and disaster for Rigoletto's own beautiful daughter. This moving masterpiece boasts the famous tune "La donna è mobile," an instant hit that was sung throughout the streets and canals of Venice almost immediately after the opera's 1851 premiere. Sharing the title role in this sumptuously staged LA Opera production at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion are Italian baritones Leo Nucci and Ambrogio Maestri.

One of the most unforgettable stories of the 20th century, The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic in war-torn Amsterdam. Anne's daily existence -- her fears, her hopes, her laughter, her grief and her family's desperate attempt to preserve humanity in an inhumane world -- drive this transcendently powerful true-life tale. Incorporating newly discovered writings from the diary of Anne Frank, as well as survivor accounts, to create an impassioned story of the lives of Jews persecuted under Nazi rule, it is a story that continually lingers in our minds throughout the generations because of its optimism and intrinsic truth. Frank's timeless story encapsulates the idea that no matter how dire the circumstances, faith in the good of people is what keeps the world in balance ... even when all seems lost. Relive her harrowing story when Arizona Theatre Company's adaptation comes to the Herberger Theater Center's Center Stage.

Truly a comic's comic, Norm MacDonald might be best known for his time on Saturday Night Live and appearances in cult classics like Billy Madison and Dirty Work, but it's on stage where he truly shines. Both David Letterman and Conan O'Brien are huge fans, and his tour-de force anti comedy roast of Bob Saget became an instant classic, as well as the five-minute "Moth Joke" on Conan which received a full one-minute laugh. MacDonald recently released his own Netflix special and Comedy Central named him in their top 100 comedians of all time. If you know Norm Macdonald, but do not know his stand-up, you do not know him. He is a stand-up comedian who must be seen to be believed.

One of Broadway's biggest new comedic hits comes to town as Hand to God arrives at Seattle's Bathhouse Theater. This devilishly funny tale centers around the young students of a Texas Christian Puppet Ministry. Taught to obey the Bible and evade "Satan's hand," things take a darkly comic turn when one devout young man's puppet takes on a shocking personality that no one could have expected. His demented puppet, Tyrone, soon throws all his relationships out of whack, showing that idle hands truly are the Devil's playthings. Described by The New Yorker as "Sesame Street meets The Exorcist," this hilariously twisted sock puppet comedy is one you won't forget.

Armed only with a spoon, an intrepid female explorer ventures into the jungle and returns with Luigi, a suitably exotic-looking member of the lost tribe she's just discovered. Yet the esteemed -- and all male -- members of London's exclusive Explorers Club still refuse to allow her entry. Granted, it's 1879 and well before women's lib, but this particular group of professors aren't exactly setting the world on fire -- one's searching for the East Pole and another believes the lost tribes of Israel actually ended up in Ireland. Tony nominee Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) wrote this crazy, Jeff Recommended battle of the sexes, dubbed "wildly funny" by Variety, now coming to the Citadel Theatre in Lake Forest as part of their 15th-anniversary celebration.

In the world of opera, Nathan Gunn is exceptional for looking every bit as good as he sounds -- and this vaunted baritone sounds very, very good indeed. Praised with equal enthusiasm by both People magazine (named to its "Sexiest Men Alive" list) and The New York Times ("[Gunn's] mighty heft and richness confer an outsized authority on everything he touches"), Gunn is one of the world's most in-demand operatic singers, appearing at the Metropolitan Opera House, Royal Opera House, Paris Opera and many more top venues. Now he comes to The Lyceum Stage in San Diego for Flying Solo, a performance that mixes together Gunn's personal stories with classic American musicals, contemporary songs and plenty of operatic fun.

The R&B crooner emerged out of the early 2000s with one Grammy nomination after another for hit singles like "Thank God I Found You," "I Wanna Know" and "Let's Stay Home Tonight." In addition to being a record producer, Joe's also worked with mega R&B celebs like Kelly Rowland, G-Unit, Nas and Fat Joe -- You can say the guy has some pretty solid resources. Boasting sizzling songs, seductive dance numbers and a show biz story that packs a powerful punch, Chicago tells the tale of convicted murderers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who'll stop at nothing to get the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn. During the showy decadence of the 1920s, their malicious crimes turn them into media darlings, producing a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which could just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. A smash on Broadway (winning six Tony Awards) and on the big screen (winning six Academy Awards), this biting satire features the unforgettable songs of Kander and Ebb, including "All That Jazz," "Cell Block Tango" and many more hits. Enjoy this musical trip back to a time when a little razzle-dazzle made everything just fine in this dazzling production at the Ambassador Theatre in the heart of Broadway.

There, she finds strength in the tales of the wise women who surround her -- and in the rituals connected to their dazzling headwear. Penned by award-winning playwright and actress Regina Taylor (I'll Fly Away, The Unit), Crowns delivers a good time (and plenty of fierce "hattitude") at the Southwest Arts Center in Atlanta.

From legendary playwright August Wilson, Fences is the powerful, stunning dramatic work that won him critical acclaim, including the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize. The story centers on Troy Maxson -- a strong man, a hard man. He's had to be in order to survive life in an America where to be proud and black is to face pressures that could crush a man's body and soul. But the 1950s are yielding to the new spirit of liberation in the 1960s, a spirit that is changing the world that has made Troy Maxson a stranger, angry and afraid, in a world he never knew and to a wife and son he understands less and less. Witness the power of this dramatic play at Marietta's New Theatre in the Square.

Chock-full of witches, prophecy, madness and murderous ambition, this supernatural tragedy comes to bold new life starring Helen Hayes Award winner Ian Merrill Peakes and Chaon Cross.

California is America's largest and most diverse state, home to people, traditions, languages and ideas from every corner of the world. California's dynamic population, culture and geography have made a notable impact on the state's artistic output, which has long been defined by a spirit of freedom and experimentation. This spirit is always on display at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, which showcases works by California artists in exhibitions like In the Land of Sunshine: Imagining the California Coast Culture, which features paintings of California life from the past 150 years, and "a sky in the palm of a hand", which pays tribute to local artists Lloyd Hamrol and Joan Perlman.
