Hip-Hop Trailblazers Digable Planets Reunite in L.A.

Buy Tickets $10 $19.50

In 1993, Digable Planets dropped their debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) and left fans of backpack rap reeling. The trio of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler and former Howard students Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving sampled heavily from Art Blakey for their inescapable hit "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," turning hip-hop heads on to hidden jazz tracks. One Grammy and a second jazz-infused album later and Digable Planets had rap lovers digging in crates for albums by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers and The Last Poets. Throughout the '00s, the group branched out to other projects -- including Butler's abstract duo Shabazz Palaces and Vieira's kid's hip-hop collaboration with Prince Paul and members of Jurassic 5 and The Roots. Now, you can see all three creamy spies together again in concert at The Novo by Microsoft.

The comedic storytelling of Ms. Pat is founded on some intense sources of inspiration. A mother of two by the age of 15, and a dealer of drugs throughout her teenage years (all of which she documents in her harrowing and hilarious autobiography, Rabbit), Ms. Pat managed to turn her life around and find some hard-hitting humor in the difficult life she'd led. In fact, it was during visits to the welfare office for food stamps that it was first brought to her attention that she had a real knack for telling funny stories. And a decade later, her comedy career continues to thrive. She has appeared on TV Guide Network's Stand Up in Stilettos, Nickelodeon's Mom's Night Out and WTF With Marc Maron. Don't miss Ms. Pat's honest, hardcore and hilarious act onstage at Ontario Improv.

An All-Male Alice and The Fabulous Tea Party

It's a wild and crazy ride as the Fairy Story for Pride company presents a "fabulous" re-invention of Lewis Carroll's wonderful Wonderland stories. Alice and The Fabulous Tea Party is an imaginative recreation of the celebrated Rudie-DeCarlo musical, blending vaudeville, English pantomime and music hall. Set in a wild, overdone garden-themed Victorian salon, Alice (now a grown woman) returns to Wonderland at the invitation of her old friend, the Queen of Hearts. Once there, she finds that things are just as madcap and nonsensical as ever. Get ready for a no-holds-barred evening of hilarious theater infused with vaudeville, burlesque, panto, farce and fantasy. It's a perfect night out where everyone is invited to enjoy a glass of complimentary rosé (in honor of the Queen's roses) or sparkling cider to toast Lewis Carroll's 120th birth year! In honor of Pride Month 2018, you'll see an all-male cast at The Other Space at Santa Monica Playhouse.

Tony Kushner's Tony and Pulitzer-winning masterpiece finally arrives at Berkeley Rep in its entirety, directed by artistic director Tony Taccone in his 20th anniversary season at the Rep. This is something of a homecoming for the play, as Taccone was the artistic director at the Eureka Theater, who originally commissioned and staged this epic dramatic saga in the early 1990s. After its premiere at Eureka, the play went on to become one of the defining theatrical events of the 1990s. The fierce and astounding two-part drama is at once an epic exploration of American politics and gay identity, and a personal story of love and loyalty. In today's sociopolitical climate, Kushner's universal message of compassion and inclusion makes Angels in America as timely as ever.

Long before Carole King became a chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, a girl from Brooklyn. Beloved for penning such iconic pop classics as "You've Got a Friend" and "I Feel the Earth Move," she fought her way into the record business as a teenager and ultimately flourished, writing hits for some of the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her true voice. Beautiful is the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. It's no surprise that Beautiful -- The Carole King Musical won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album of 2015. See this unforgettable show at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York City.

But when the bride wants to observe a traditional Zimbabwean custom for her wedding, deep-seated tensions arise. Adding fuel to the flames, unexpected family guests turn up revealing uninvited secrets. Written by Tony-nominated writer Danai Gurira (Eclipsed), Familiar focuses on the messy, hilarious, spirited dynamic of a modern first-generation Zimbabwean American family, revealing the layers of complexities rooted in the search for a sense of belonging. This year alone, Gurira's work as an actress has shone brightly on the small screen (The Walking Dead) and in Hollywood (Black Panther). Now Seattle Rep - Bagley Wright Theatre shines a spotlight on her skill as a playwright with this fiercely funny play.

Spend an evening in the company of unforgettable strangers at The Band's Visit, now nominated for 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical. It rejoices in the way music brings us to life, brings us to laughter, brings us to tears, and ultimately, brings us together. In an Israeli desert town where every day feels the same, something different is suddenly in the air. Dina, the local café owner, had long resigned her desires for romance to daydreaming about exotic films and music from her youth. When a band of Egyptian musicians show up lost at her café, she and her fellow locals take them in for the night. As their lives intertwine in unexpected ways, this once sleepy town begins to wake up. Included on every major "Best of the Year" list, The Band's Visit takes the stage at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre.

Before their story became the basis for a massively selling memoir, a Tony-nominated play and a movie, the Delaney sisters weren't widely known. That suddenly changed when at the respective ages of 103 and 101, Sadie and Bessie sat down with a reporter from The New York Times to talk about their lives. Born to a former slave who became the first African-American Episcopal bishop, the Delany sisters went on to be pioneers in the fight for civil rights, witnessing a century of change from the front lines. Now, Chicago's Goodman Theatre brings the "provocative and entertaining" (The New York Times) stage adaptation of their journey to life.

The martyred heroine of France fought and defeated the besieging English at Orleans, was captured and taken prisoner in Burgundy, and put on trial and burned at the stake -- all by the age of 19. Depicted as neither witch, saint nor madwoman in George Bernard Shaw's compelling story, Joan of Arc is but an illiterate farm girl whose focus on the individual rocks the church and state. Led by director Eric Tucker, four actors perform over 25 roles in Bedlam's riveting, stripped-down production of Saint Joan at Folger Theatre in Washington, DC.

Anne Frank's Powerful True-Life Story

Buy Tickets $20 - $34 $60 - $68

One of the most unforgettable stories of the 20th century, The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic in war-torn Amsterdam. Anne's daily existence -- her fears, her hopes, her laughter, her grief and her family's desperate attempt to preserve humanity in an inhumane world -- drive this transcendently powerful true-life tale. Incorporating newly discovered writings from the diary of Anne Frank, as well as survivor accounts, to create an impassioned story of the lives of Jews persecuted under Nazi rule, it is a story that continually lingers in our minds throughout the generations because of its optimism and intrinsic truth. Frank's timeless story encapsulates the idea that no matter how dire the circumstances, faith in the good of people is what keeps the world in balance ... even when all seems lost. Relive her harrowing story when Arizona Theatre Company's adaptation comes to the Herberger Theater Center's Center Stage.

Norm MacDonald (SNL) Brings His Dry Wit to Stage

Buy Tickets $12.50 $25

Truly a comic's comic, Norm MacDonald might be best known for his time on Saturday Night Live and appearances in cult classics like Billy Madison and Dirty Work, but it's on stage where he truly shines. Both David Letterman and Conan O'Brien are huge fans, and his tour-de force anti comedy roast of Bob Saget became an instant classic, as well as the five-minute "Moth Joke" on Conan which received a full one-minute laugh. MacDonald recently released his own Netflix special and Comedy Central named him in their top 100 comedians of all time. If you know Norm Macdonald, but do not know his stand-up, you do not know him. He is a stand-up comedian who must be seen to be believed.

Hand to God: Tony-Nominated Demonic Puppet Comedy

Buy Tickets $17 - $18 $34 - $36

One of Broadway's biggest new comedic hits comes to town as Hand to God arrives at Seattle's Bathhouse Theater. This devilishly funny tale centers around the young students of a Texas Christian Puppet Ministry. Taught to obey the Bible and evade "Satan's hand," things take a darkly comic turn when one devout young man's puppet takes on a shocking personality that no one could have expected. His demented puppet, Tyrone, soon throws all his relationships out of whack, showing that idle hands truly are the Devil's playthings. Described by The New Yorker as "Sesame Street meets The Exorcist," this hilariously twisted sock puppet comedy is one you won't forget.

Join us for Oscar Wilde's comedy masterpiece! The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People, revolves around one of the most ingenious, and hilarious, cases of mistaken identity ever put into a play. Cecily Cardew and Gwendolen Fairfax are both in love with the same mythical suitor. The reliable Jack Worthing has wooed Gwendolen under the name Ernest, while the adorable dandy Algernon Moncrieff has also posed as Ernest to win the heart of Cecily. When all four arrive at Jack's country home on the same weekend accompanied by the formidable Lady Bracknell, the gallants must grapple with the riotous consequences of their deceptions. Our production at The Madeline Garden in Pasadena features a full cast of professional Los Angeles actors, beautiful costumes, and an immersive dining experience. All general admissions will include a full English high-tea meal of tomato bisque, assorted tea sandwiches and savories, cream scone with clotted cream and jam, crème brûlée, tiramisu, chocolate strawberries, and other seasonal selections. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

Chicago on Broadway: The Red-Hot, Tony-Winning Musical ("All That Jazz")

Buy Tickets $33 - $85 $49.50 - $139

Boasting sizzling songs, seductive dance numbers and a show biz story that packs a powerful punch, Chicago tells the tale of convicted murderers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who'll stop at nothing to get the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn. During the showy decadence of the 1920s, their malicious crimes turn them into media darlings, producing a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which could just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. A smash on Broadway (winning six Tony Awards) and on the big screen (winning six Academy Awards), this biting satire features the unforgettable songs of Kander and Ebb, including "All That Jazz," "Cell Block Tango" and many more hits. Enjoy this musical trip back to a time when a little razzle-dazzle made everything just fine in this dazzling production at the Ambassador Theatre in the heart of Broadway.

It was Elvis Presley at his most charismatic, and only a small group of fans had the privilege of being there... until now. With actor Casey Ryan as Elvis, the musical tribute show Elvis '68 relives a historic moment in music history, leather suit and all. This stage re-creation of the crooner's 1968 live comeback special explores a pivotal moment in the life and career of Elvis Presley. At the time, Elvis hadn't played a live show in seven years and his popularity was fading. But what was meant to be a safe Christmas concert turned into an intimate jam session, as Elvis and friends intercut rock 'n' roll hits with storytelling and audience interaction.

Crowns: Stirring Gospel Musical About Sisterhood

Buy Tickets $25 $40

A powerful exploration of African-American history and identity, Crowns follows six black women in the South whose stories of love, loss and sisterhood are woven into the hats that crown their heads and the dynamic gospel songs that speak their truths. There, she finds strength in the tales of the wise women who surround her -- and in the rituals connected to their dazzling headwear. Penned by award-winning playwright and actress Regina Taylor (I'll Fly Away, The Unit), Crowns delivers a good time (and plenty of fierce "hattitude") at the Southwest Arts Center in Atlanta.

August Wilson's Masterpiece: Fences

Buy Tickets $20 $25

From legendary playwright August Wilson, Fences is the powerful, stunning dramatic work that won him critical acclaim, including the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize. The story centers on Troy Maxson -- a strong man, a hard man. He's had to be in order to survive life in an America where to be proud and black is to face pressures that could crush a man's body and soul. But the 1950s are yielding to the new spirit of liberation in the 1960s, a spirit that is changing the world that has made Troy Maxson a stranger, angry and afraid, in a world he never knew and to a wife and son he understands less and less. Witness the power of this dramatic play at Marietta's New Theatre in the Square.

Shakespeare was a magician with words, but until the acclaimed playwright-director Aaron Posner teamed up with the famed magician Teller (of Penn & Teller) to bring the enchanted world of The Tempest to life in 2015, an actual magician had probably never staged Shakespeare before. Now this dynamic creative duo reteams to bring Shakespeare's haunting psychological thriller Macbeth to the stage of The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare, "the greatest new theater in the world" (Chicago Tribune). Chock-full of witches, prophecy, madness and murderous ambition, this supernatural tragedy comes to bold new life starring Helen Hayes Award winner Ian Merrill Peakes and Chaon Cross.

This proves harder than they thought as it seems everyone is offended by something different. Then Riley, Jack's last illicit lover, crashes the party with her own ideas about the script. And Jack's upstairs neighbor, Andie, a young African American woman, has her own thoughts on what makes someone "woke." New comedy All American Sex Addict/Woke AF makes its world premiere at L.A.'s Dorie Theatre as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival.
